Erica Cisneros, first grade teacher at Mize Elementary, was honored on September 21, 2026, with the Making a Difference Award for her dedication to her students. This award, sponsored by the USD 232 Education Foundation in partnership with Great American Bank, recognizes educators and staff who go above and beyond to positively impact the lives of our students, families, and staff.

Erica was nominated by a Mize parent who shared in the nomination:

“I am honored to nominate Mrs. Cisneros for the Making a Difference Award because she is so much more than a teacher to my son—she is someone who truly made a lasting difference in his life.

“When my son was in her first-grade classroom, she saw something in him that went beyond academics. She took the time to understand him, encourage him, and help him believe in himself. She went above and beyond her role as his teacher by tutoring him and giving him additional time, patience, and support when he needed it.

What meant the most to me as a parent was knowing that my son had someone at school who genuinely cared about him. She celebrated his successes, encouraged him through his struggles, and made him feel seen and capable. Her kindness and dedication didn’t stop when the school day ended. She invested her own time and energy because she wanted to see him succeed.

“Over time, Mrs. Cisneros became more than just my son’s teacher. She became someone our family deeply appreciated and trusted—someone who left an impact that will stay with us long after first grade.

“There are teachers who teach children, and then there are teachers who change them. Mrs. Cisneros is the latter. She made my son feel supported, valued, and capable, and I will always be grateful that he had the opportunity to have her in his life.

“She truly made a difference, and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this award.”

In recognition of her kindness and dedication, Erica received $300 from the USD 232 Education Foundation through its partnership with Great American Bank, along with a handcrafted award designed by students in the CTEC CAPS program.
