Elena Kolbrek De Leon, middle school orchestra director for USD 232, was honored on January 8, 2026, with the Making a Difference Award for her outstanding contributions to students and the district. This award, sponsored by the USD 232 Education Foundation in partnership with Great American Bank, recognizes educators and staff who go above and beyond to positively impact students’ lives.
Having only joined USD 232 during the 2025–26 school year, Elena has already made a remarkable impact. She was tasked with launching a district-wide orchestra program from the ground up — and did so with extraordinary success.
In only a few months, Elena built a thriving middle school orchestra program serving mostly beginner students. Through her dedication, creativity, and high expectations, students have made significant progress in a short period of time. To support individual growth, Elena offers virtual after-school lessons and established an after-school orchestra to ensure high school string players could also participate.
Beyond the classroom, Elena has expanded opportunities for students to showcase their talents and build confidence. She nominated students to represent USD 232 at the East Central Kansas Honors Orchestra and coordinated a special performance at Crown Center in downtown Kansas City in December. She also empowers students through leadership opportunities, including guest conducting, serving on the orchestra council, and developing public speaking skills during concerts.
Most importantly, Elena has created an environment where students are excited, engaged, and motivated. Her passion for music and student growth is evident in every aspect of the program.
In the nomination, the parent shared:
“Mrs. Kolbrek has created a thriving district-wide orchestra program from scratch in a mere three months. The progress these mostly beginner students have made in such a short time is truly remarkable and a testament to her efforts. Most importantly, her students seem to be excited, having fun, and working hard! The district is very fortunate to have Mrs. Kolbrek leading the development of the new orchestra program!”
In recognition of her dedication, Elena received $300 from the USD 232 Education Foundation through its partnership with Great American Bank, along with a handcrafted award designed by students in the CTEC CAPS program.
Elena’s vision, leadership, and commitment to student success exemplify the spirit of the Making a Difference Award. Her work has laid a strong foundation for the future of orchestra education in USD 232 and is already creating meaningful opportunities for students to learn, grow, and thrive through music.
